Growing up in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Dr. Russell Phillips first became interested in dentistry when a high school sports injury landed him in the dental chair and a career seed was planted. He attended college at Penn State University where he played on the varsity soccer team. His dental school was the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine where he received his DMD degree with honors in 1975. Dr. Phillips then returned to the University of Pennsylvania for a three year specialty combined certificate program in Periodontics, Fixed Prosthodontics / Periodontal Prosthesis. This intensive program focused on using periodontal principles to prosthetically restore mouths severely damaged by gum disease. It provided specialist training in periodontal surgical procedures and complex crown and bridge techniques.
Dr. Phillips came to Washington in 1980 and launched his practice in 1984 in its current location. He continued for 13 years to return to the University of Pennsylvania in a part time teaching faculty position as an Assistant Clinical Professor, teaching both the dental school and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Dental Residency Program. Dental implants historically entered their modern ere in the early to mid 1980's and Dr. Phillips has been restoring them since their beginning. In the mid 2000's, he utilized his surgical experience to begin bone grafting with technological developments - digital photography, digital x-rays, digital panorex, cone beam 3D scanner, the "Wand" single tooth anesthetic system, Invisalign Orthodontics, and laser dentistry.
Outside the four walls of his practice, Dr. Phillips has traveled on dental missions to Haiti and Nicaragua and keeps an ongoing relationship with the Nicaragua group. He has three children and a busy family. He enjoys woodcarving, sailing, fishing, and photography.
Dr. Phillips is a member of several dental societies including the American Dental Association, District of Columbia Dental Society, is a fellow in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI), The Implant Prosthodontic Section of the ICOI , The American Academy of Implant Dentistry, The Washington Dental Study Club and the Renaissance Study Club.
Dr. Phillips has the training and experience to manage a wide variety of treatment needs and truly keeps patients under comprehensive care. He works with other specialists in the area when more of a team approach is needed.
