During this time, he continued to work in the hospitality field and volunteer as much time as possible at the New England Medical Center helping patients with head and neck cancer. Upon completion of the dental assisting program, he was chosen to be part of a full-time, two year research study in the Oral Cancer Department at the Tufts School of Dental Medicine caring for and monitoring patients undergoing head and neck cancer treatments and collaborating with some of the leading doctors in the field. During this time, he was enrolled at Northeastern University taking night courses to complete the pre-medical course work necessary to enter into dental school. Dr. Russo was accepted to Tufts School of Dental Medicine and was able to continue working part-time in the dental field for a community health center on the outskirts of Boston. Dr. Russo completed his doctoral program from Tufts in 1998.
After graduating dental school, Dr. Russo continued his employment at the Geiger Gibson Community Health Center; this was the first health center to open in the United States treating the under-served population. The health center was able to provide externship programs for third and fourth year students from the Boston School of Dental Medicine and the Forsyth School for Dental Hygiene. Dr. Russo was awarded the position of Assistant Clinical Professor from the Boston School of Dental Medicine in addition to an Assistant Professor position for the Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene. During this time, he was able to dedicate eight hours per week providing dental services to the Greater Boston's homeless population in one of the city's homeless shelters. Dr. Russo was also one of the original dentists to help the under-served population here on Cape Cod. He was part of the initial opening of the Ellen Jones Community Health Center in Harwich, Massachusetts. After 1,110 patients walked through the doors the first month the health center was opened, the days of operation was increased from two to five days a week to accommodate the needs of the community.
Doctor Russo moved back to Rhode Island for a period of time to be closer to his family but found that he was missing the charm of Cape Cod. Dr. Russo has been living on Cape Cod since 2006 and would not consider any other place to reside. He has over 15 years of dental experience and is well known for his patience and treating patients as if they were family. Dr. Russo believes that the key to better care for his patients is by keeping himself well educated and current in the ever evolving field of dentistry. He is continuously updating his skill and knowledge through courses and seminars. He is a member of the American Dental Society, Massachusetts Dental Society and the Cape Cod District Dental Association.
Dr. Russo is honored to be part of the exceptional team here at Mill Pond Dental and is looking forward to meeting each and every one. Read Less
